Mstislav Rostropovich and Gennadi Rozhdestvensky were among the great musicians of the Soviet Union who were allowed to visit the West from the mid-50’s and both featured regularly in the musical life of the UK.
This concert with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1965 was part of an epic cycle in which Rostropovich played over 50 works for cello in just 3 months.
As an encore Rostropovich played the Bach Sarabande in C minor for solo cello.
