Richard Strauss

Erich Kleiber conducts ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ Act 1

1952. Royal Opera House, London
Composer Richard Strauss
Conductor Erich Kleiber
Singers Sylvia Fisher, Howell Glynne, Constance Shacklock
Ensemble Covent Garden Opera
Genre Opera

This off-air recording is of its age and is very variable in sound quality, with serious pitch problems towards the end particularly.  However, it is a rare and valuable record of the work of a great conductor and of the opera at Covent Garden in the post-war period.

The opera is sung in English.

In the period immediately following the Second World War most of the operas were sung in English, except for appearances of high-profile stars, such as Callas in Norma.  The great conductor Erich Kleiber made frequent appearances in this period and was considered to enhance the quality of the orchestral playing.  Sylvia Fisher was a stalwart of the opera company, taking major roles in operas by Wagner, Strauss and Janaček.

This recording comes from the collection of Patrick Saul.
