Karl Engel

Karl Engel was born in Basel in June 1923 and studied at the Basel Music Academy with Paul Baumgartner, then later in Paris with Alfred Cortot. He won the Geneva International Music Competition in 1949 and built his early career across the Swiss and European concert circuit through the 1950s in the standard solo recital and concerto repertoire.

His career evolved into one of the central accompaniment partnerships of the post-war era. He was the regular Lieder partner of Hermann Prey for nearly forty years, and worked extensively with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Hans Hotter, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Christa Ludwig and Edith Mathis in recital and recording. His solo and chamber-music work remained substantial — he recorded the complete Mozart piano sonatas and a substantial Schumann cycle for Telefunken — but his enduring reputation rested on the German lieder partnerships. He taught at the Hannover Hochschule für Musik from 1958 to 1986, with substantial influence on the next generation of German accompanists.

Engel died in Bern in May 2006. Music Preserved’s archive includes a range of his recital and accompaniment work, particularly the lieder partnerships of the 1960s and 1970s.
